I met with my oral surgeon on Tuesday and he has given me a date near the end of Febuary. I am so excited and scared at the same time. What should I expect?

I'm getting surgery today! AHH! it's scary, but i'm looking at it as an experience that will improve my life and that I can share with people who want more information, like yourself. So I might have more to say after today.

Okay, I'm back. I made it through to the other side. WOOHOO! Okay, so what you should expect. Hmm. I'm thinking. There is a lot that goes on so my tips or shared experience probably won't cover everything. In the hospital when you're waiting on surgery to begin, be prepared to wait. There are a lot of people who need to see you and talk to you. The nurse who first brought me into the room, gave me a gown, and put me in the bed, the second nurse who started my IV, the anesthesiologist, some other nurses, and your surgeon. My surgery was supposed to be at 3, I got to the hospital at 1:30 and they immediately took me back and started prepping me, but I didn't even go into the operating room until like 5 o' clock. I was so anxious! I was so ready to just be knocked out and get it over with, but no I was sitting in bed, fully awake, with an IV in my arm for like 2 hours. Also, I knew this going in, but there is a possibility you will vomit afterwards. A HIGH possibility. My doctor told me this beforehand and I remember thinking, not me, it takes a lot to make me sick. I didn't throw up at all after wisdom teeth removal, so I thought I had a good chance of being fine. Uhm, no. I only vomitted once at like 4am my night in the hospital, but still I was shocked that it happened. My surgery was outpatient, which means I was in the hospital for less than 24 hours. So I left the day after at around noon. I had to prove I could hold down fluids though. I've heard that people who see their appearance after (because there is SO much swelling and all) actually get depressed and upset, which I would assume doesn't help the healing process. So, I'm day 6 post-op and haven't looked in the mirror yet. I don't need to be upset about my appearance that will eventually go away anyway. I can feel that i'm swollen and all messed up, so I don't need to see it. So, unless you're just too too curious, i'd advise not looking in the mirror for awhile. I'm not sure if you're getting upper, lower, or both jaw surgery, but I got both upper and lower and have a splint in my mouth in addition to bands. So basically, there is NO room to get anything into my mouth except liquids. I tried apple sauce and pudding, but its just too thick to get past the bands and splint. So basically i've had water, milk, juice, yogurt, chicken broth, and ensure. Yeah, the diet sucks. I'm very frustrated with it already. Especially since I can't get hardly anything in my mouth. The feeding syringe doesn't really fit into my mouth so I can't eat anything without drooling/making a mess. For your sake, I hope you don't need a splint because I swear it's making everything worse. Expect your face to be a little sore (duh, it basically just got reconstructed), but the pain isn't bad because everything is numb and of course, pain meds. If you're getting upper, expect serious congestion. It comes from blood clots that got created when they moved around your upper jaw I guess. Not supposed to blow your nose after this though. I used q-tips and saline to clean out my nose. It worked. And this is obvious, but expect to take it very easy for a very long time. Like I said, I'm on day 6 and I feel sick after just walking up the stairs because I get too winded (Still a little congested, and mouth shut) and when I can't breathe well, I start to feel nauseous. I've just been spending a lot of time in bed. Overall, pain not bad at all, just sucks not being able to do normal things normally (breathe, eat, etc). Good luck.
